RAWALPINDI: Doctors at Holy Family Hospital have successfully reattached the completely severed hand of a five-year-old boy from Jhelum through a complex replantation procedure, restoring blood flow to the injured limb.
The child’s hand had been completely severed in an incident involving a toka (a heavy cutting tool). He was brought to Holy Family Hospital on August 28 in critical condition, where a specialist team led by Dr Tayyab and Dr Ambreen performed the emergency surgery.
Microvascular Surgery Restores Blood Flow
The medical team used microsurgical techniques to reconnect the blood vessels and veins of the severed hand. Following the procedure, blood circulation to the reattached limb was successfully restored.
Hand replantation is a complex surgical procedure in which a completely severed body part is surgically reconnected. The outcome can depend significantly on how quickly the patient receives specialist treatment and how the severed part is preserved before reaching the hospital.
How to Preserve a Severed Limb
Medical guidance advises that a severed body part should not be placed directly on ice. Instead, it should be wrapped or placed in a clean plastic bag, with the sealed bag then placed in a separate container containing ice.
The patient should be taken to an appropriate emergency medical facility as quickly as possible.
Following the successful operation, blood flow was restored to the boy’s reattached hand.
