ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan, through its Education Testing Council (ETC), has announced the schedule for the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) 2026 for law graduates seeking enrollment as advocates.

The Law-GAT is mandatory for graduates who wish to enroll with the Bar and is conducted by ETC under HEC’s supervision.

According to the commission, candidates who have completed a bachelor’s degree in law or an equivalent qualification from a local or foreign university recognized by HEC or the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) are eligible to apply.

Online registration will begin on Tuesday, March 03, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., while the test is scheduled to be held on Sunday, April 05, 2026. Any changes in the schedule will be communicated through the official HEC website.

The test will consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and candidates must secure at least 50 out of 100 marks to qualify. The curriculum and test pattern are available for download on the HEC website.

ETC conducts the Law-GAT quarterly in major cities across Pakistan. Applicants will be allowed to select their preferred test center; however, ETC reserves the right to change the center if fewer than 250 candidates register at a selected location.

The commission clarified that individuals who have already qualified the Law-GAT, those who have exhausted all seven attempts, and candidates currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree in law programme are not eligible to apply.

HEC further stated that although securing 50 percent marks is required to pass the test, candidates must also fulfill additional criteria set by the Pakistan Bar Council to enroll as advocates. Passing the Law-GAT alone does not grant the right to practice law.
