RAWALPINDI: Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar (SI) has inaugurated a Rs100 million solarization project at Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), marking a significant step toward renewable energy and sustainable campus development.
The newly commissioned 756.38 kWp grid-tied solar power system, equipped with net metering and DG synchronization, is expected to reduce electricity costs, lower carbon emissions, and strengthen the university’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Rs100 Million Jointly Funded Project
The solarization project was completed with a total investment of Rs100 million, jointly funded by the Higher Education Commission (Rs50 million) and Fatima Jinnah Women University (Rs50 million).
The system includes 476.72 kWp installed at the City Campus and 279.66 kWp at Campus-II. USPCASE, UET Peshawar served as the project consultant, while Associated Technologies (Private) Limited executed the installation.
HEC Reaffirms Support for Higher Education
During the inauguration ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza (PoP, T.I.) highlighted the university’s achievements in national and international rankings, research, innovation, global partnerships, and sustainability initiatives.
Chairman HEC Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar congratulated the university on completing the project and praised its progress in higher education. He reaffirmed HEC’s commitment to supporting universities through collaboration in academic excellence, research, innovation, and sustainable infrastructure.
He also emphasized the critical role of teachers in shaping future generations and advancing national development through quality education and research.
Solar System to Cut Costs and Carbon Emissions
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza thanked the HEC for its continued support, saying the project reflects FJWU’s commitment to responsible resource management and a greener, energy-efficient campus.
According to the University’s Planning and Development Directorate, the solar power system has already started generating clean electricity and is expected to recover its investment within 2.5 to 2.8 years, while significantly reducing electricity expenses and the university’s carbon footprint.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Tahir Mukhtar, Director Planning and Development, who acknowledged the contributions of HEC, university leadership, project partners, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
