Heavy rains trigger landslides, disrupt roads in Shangla

SHANGLA: Continuous rainfall over the past several days has disrupted normal life in Shangla district, triggering landslides, blocking key roads, and raising water levels in rivers and streams.

Authorities said major routes, including the Alpuri–Bisham and Alpuri–Swat roads, were affected by falling rocks and debris, causing traffic disruptions. While some main roads have been partially cleared, several link roads remain closed, creating difficulties for commuters.

The district has experienced rain for three consecutive days, accompanied by strong cold winds and a drop in temperatures. Light snowfall has also been reported in upper mountainous areas, further intensifying weather conditions.

Agriculture hit by hailstorms

Severe hailstorms along with rainfall have caused significant damage to orchards and crops. Officials and farmers reported that blossoms on fruit trees have been destroyed, raising concerns about reduced yields in the upcoming harvest season.

Farmers fear that the damage could lead to substantial financial losses and impact local agricultural output.

Risk of flooding in low-lying areas

Increased water flow in streams, seasonal nullahs and natural springs has heightened the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. In some locations, water has reached roads, making travel hazardous.

Restoration efforts underway

District authorities have deployed heavy machinery to clear debris and restore road connectivity. Several major routes have been reopened, while work continues on affected link roads.

Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated on weather and road conditions as unstable weather persists.
