Rawalpindi, August 1: Heavy monsoon rains inundated several low-lying neighbourhoods of Rawalpindi Cantonment, with rainwater entering dozens of homes in Gawalmandi and nearby localities, causing widespread damage to household belongings and disrupting electricity supply in parts of the city.
Residents said continuous rainfall submerged streets and residential lanes in Gawalmandi, Raja Bazaar, Committee Chowk, Sadiqabad, Kattarian and surrounding areas, severely disrupting normal life.
Floodwater entered homes, damaging furniture, electrical appliances and other valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees. Many families were forced to remove water from their homes without immediate official assistance.
Affected residents, including Ramzan, Fatima Bibi, Afzal, Zubair and Tahira Bibi, said water remained inside their houses for several hours, causing significant financial losses.
They alleged that despite repeated requests for help, they received no effective response. According to residents, the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board referred them to WASA, while WASA officials directed them back to the Cantonment Board, delaying relief efforts.
Residents blamed the flooding on inadequate maintenance of drains and the stormwater drainage system, alleging that poor pre-monsoon cleaning caused rainwater to overflow into streets and residential areas.
They urged the authorities to launch an emergency drainage operation, clear stagnant water from affected neighbourhoods and compensate families for the losses caused by the flooding.
