A 26-year-old man who climbed onto the roof of a hospital in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales, dressed as the fictional Grim Reaper, has been fined after admitting to offences that caused alarm among patients, staff, and visitors.
The incident took place on June 6, when the man, wearing a black cloak and face covering, was seen standing on the hospital’s main roof. Witnesses reported that he appeared to be holding a long bladed object, prompting an emergency response.
Emergency Services Responded
According to authorities, North Wales Police and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and brought the situation under control after an operation lasting around 50 minutes.
The incident caused concern among people at the hospital, although no injuries were reported.
Man Admitted the Offences
Police identified the suspect as Leon Gillespie, a resident of Deganwy.
He was arrested on allegations of causing unnecessary alarm within NHS premises, disrupting hospital operations, and refusing to leave despite police instructions.
Gillespie later admitted the offences in court.
Court Imposes Fine
Following his guilty plea, Llandudno Magistrates’ Court ordered Gillespie to pay a £200 fine, along with £50 in compensation, a £100 victim surcharge, and £100 in court costs.
During the hearing, the court also heard that Gillespie admitted to separate theft offences involving cat food and other items from a Pets at Home store, as well as food products from another retailer.
Hospital Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy
Hospital officials said they maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward behaviour that causes fear, disruption, or disorder within healthcare facilities, emphasizing that such incidents will not be tolerated.
The Grim Reaper is a fictional figure in Western folklore commonly associated with death, which authorities said contributed to the panic caused by the incident.
