Faisal Karim Kundi questions provincial govt’s failure to address worsening situation in Kurram
Peshawar: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi has called upon the provincial government to step down in view of the ongoing situation in Kurram district.
In a statement, the governor criticized both the provincial and federal governments, questioning their inaction.
“Kurram is on fire – what are the provincial and federal governments doing?” he remarked.
He questioned the administration’s inability to reopen Parachinar road, adding that the government seemed to have no other agenda than to retain power.
The crisis in Kurram has drawn wider criticism, with Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leader Allama Nasir Abbas also condemning the provincial government.
He revealed efforts to replace the deputy commissioner of the district and said that both KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan ignored his pleas.
Abbas highlighted the devastating death toll in Kurram, where more than 150 deaths were reported, and complained about the absence of federal and provincial administration and the lack of visible security measures.
Tribal violence in the Kurram region has been a burning issue in the country, especially since November, when conflict between warring tribes intensified, killing more than 130 people and injuring over 180 others.
A recent episode of clashes sparked by the ambush of two separate convoys under police escort left 52 dead on 21 November. Clashes subsequently escalated, and after days of fighting, both groups involved in the conflict agreed to an “indefinite ceasefire” on December 6.
Despite several days of Grand Jirgas and directives issued by the All Parties Conference (APC) – led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur – to demolish rival tribes’ country houses and confiscate their weapons, peace has eluded the area. resulting in an uncertain future.
The deteriorating security situation has severely disrupted daily life in Kurram. Food, gasoline and medical supplies are critically low, and residents are struggling to access basic services due to road closures.
The lack of gas forced the closure of tandoors and restaurants, compounding the community’s plight. More than a week ago, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) provided relief goods worth Rs 150 crore to the deputy commissioner in Kurram for further distribution among the affected. violence.
