TOPI, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, August 13, 2026: The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI) and Kazakhstan’s leading research institution Nazarbayev University (NU) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen academic, research and technological collaboration between Pakistan and Central Asia.
The partnership is expected to create new opportunities for students, researchers and faculty members through joint academic programmes, research initiatives and international exchange opportunities.
According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, Nazarbayev University ranks first among universities in Central Asia and the Caucasus, making the collaboration a significant step toward expanding GIKI’s global academic partnerships.
A delegation from Nazarbayev University, led by Provost Prof. Dr Rehan Sadiq, visited GIKI and held discussions with Rector Prof. Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, pro-rectors, deans and heads of departments regarding future cooperation in education and research.
The delegation also visited GIKI’s research laboratories and campus facilities during the visit.
Focus on AI, Dual Degrees and Student Exchanges
Under the MoU, both universities will explore multiple areas of collaboration, including dual-degree programmes, Artificial Intelligence initiatives, undergraduate and postgraduate exchange programmes, and joint academic activities.
The proposed cooperation includes a 1+1 Master’s programme in Artificial Intelligence and 2+2 undergraduate programmes, along with faculty and student exchanges.
Officials identified student and faculty exchange programmes as an immediate priority to strengthen academic interaction and knowledge-sharing between the two institutions.
Strengthening Pakistan-Central Asia Academic Links
GIKI Rector Prof. Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid described the agreement as an important milestone that would enhance the institute’s connections with international research universities and provide students and faculty with greater global exposure.
Nazarbayev University Provost Prof. Dr Rehan Sadiq highlighted the potential for cooperation in emerging fields, particularly Artificial Intelligence, and emphasized the importance of academic mobility between the two institutions.
The MoU represents a broader effort to connect Pakistan and Central Asia through education, innovation and research collaboration, while creating new pathways for young researchers and students in both countries.
