NEW YORK, September 24 — Germany has praised Pakistan’s role as a mediator in regional conflicts, particularly its diplomatic engagement over tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.
The recognition came following a meeting between Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to the German Foreign Office, Berlin appreciates Pakistan’s role as a “reasonable mediator” in regional conflicts, specifically highlighting Islamabad’s engagement concerning the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.
The two strategically important waterways have remained at the centre of international diplomatic attention because of their significance for global shipping, energy supplies and maritime security.
During their meeting, Dar and Wadephul also discussed the war in Ukraine and agreed on the need to advance negotiations aimed at achieving peace.
The talks came as senior diplomats and world leaders gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly, with ongoing conflicts and regional security challenges dominating diplomatic engagements.
Germany has repeatedly stressed the importance of maritime security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, warning that disruptions to major shipping routes can have wider consequences for global energy supplies, trade and economic stability.
Pakistan, meanwhile, has remained diplomatically engaged with regional and international partners amid efforts to ease tensions and encourage dialogue in conflicts affecting the Middle East and key maritime routes.
The meeting between Dar and Wadephul also reflected continued diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Germany on major international and regional issues.
