Police in Rawalpindi have arrested three men for allegedly killing a 55-year-old friend in an attempt to take control of his house, bringing a weeks-long investigation into an unidentified body to a close.
The Rawalpindi blind murder case began on July 13 after a decomposed body was found in Nullah Lai near Usmanpura, within the limits of City Police Station. According to police, the victim’s lower body had been wrapped in plastic while the upper portion was covered with cloth.
The body was shifted to a hospital for a post-mortem examination, while police registered a murder case on behalf of the state and began efforts to identify the victim.
Victim Identified as Abbas Raza
Investigators from the Homicide Investigation Unit later identified the deceased as Abbas Raza, a 55-year-old resident of a nearby area.
Police said Raza had divorced his wife, while his children were living in Karachi. He had been residing alone at his home in Rawalpindi.
After confirming his identity, investigators examined the people who regularly visited him. Police found that three men, identified as Hamid, Javed and Abid, frequently met the victim.
The suspects were placed under investigation as police used technical evidence, human intelligence and footage from surveillance cameras installed in the area.
CCTV Footage Raised Suspicion
According to officials, CCTV recordings showed the three men behaving suspiciously near Raza’s house around the time of the alleged murder.
Police subsequently intensified the investigation and questioned the suspects, who allegedly admitted killing Raza to seize his property.
The three men were formally arrested following the alleged confession and the recovery of supporting evidence.
Victim Allegedly Strangled
SP Rawal Saad Arshad said the suspects allegedly strangled Raza with a noose before placing his body in a sack and dumping it in Nullah Lai.
Police also recovered a vehicle and a motorcycle believed to have been used in the crime.
Arshad said the case had initially been registered after the recovery of an unidentified body. He added that the suspects would be presented before the court with the evidence collected during the investigation.
