ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and former PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said Pakistan can overcome its political and economic challenges only through constitutional governance, the rule of law and meaningful institutional reforms.

Addressing an event in Islamabad, Abbasi said solutions to Pakistan’s problems were available, but implementing them required political will, responsible leadership and sound decision-making.

The former PML-N leader said Pakistan had made unprecedented sacrifices in the fight against terrorism and stressed the need for long-term political and economic stability.

Abbasi said repeated reliance on International Monetary Fund programmes could not provide a permanent solution to the country’s economic difficulties.

He maintained that sustainable economic reforms were essential and that governing Pakistan in accordance with the Constitution was the only reliable path towards stability, development and prosperity.

The former prime minister also called on all political forces, including the PML-N and other major parties, to reach a broad consensus on constitutional principles despite their political differences.

He said the country could emerge from its current crises only when political leaders and state institutions played a constructive role and operated within their constitutional limits.
