FLORIDA: Another person has died in the US state of Florida after contracting a potentially deadly infection caused by Vibrio vulnificus, bringing the number of deaths linked to the bacteria in the state this year to two.
According to the Florida Department of Health, 14 cases of the infection have been reported in the state so far this year.
Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacterium commonly found in warm seawater and brackish water. People can become infected when an open wound comes into contact with contaminated water. Infection can also occur after consuming raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters.
In some cases, the infection can progress rapidly and become life-threatening. Severe infections may cause skin blisters, wounds and rapid tissue destruction, as well as bloodstream infections and septic shock. In the most serious cases, extensive tissue damage can lead to amputation.
Health officials warn that some patients can die within just one or two days after developing a severe infection.
Experts advise people who have been exposed to warm seawater or brackish water through an open wound to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms such as redness, swelling, severe pain, changes in skin colour or fever.
Cases of Vibrio vulnificus in Florida typically increase during warmer weather.
