ISLAMABAD — The federal government has reviewed wheat procurement arrangements and stock availability, assuring that sufficient reserves are in place across provinces to meet national consumption needs ahead of the new harvesting season.
The review took place during the sixth meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee, chaired by Rana Tanveer Hussain, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research. Senior federal and provincial officials attended the session and presented updates on procurement preparedness, stock positions and supply management plans.
Officials informed the committee that adequate wheat stocks are currently available nationwide, and there is no risk of shortage. Coordinated measures are in place to ensure uninterrupted supply in markets, particularly as the country approaches the arrival of the new crop.
Provincial procurement plans
Provinces briefed the committee on their respective procurement strategies. The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has adopted a hybrid model with 75% public sector participation and 25% private sector involvement to improve efficiency and market responsiveness.
Sindh officials said wheat procurement in the province will be carried out through the public sector to maintain stable supply and price management.
The illustrative wheat procurement price has been set at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms. Provinces have been directed to ensure smooth implementation of procurement operations under the existing framework, which will remain in place for one year.
Long-term policy and Ramadan monitoring
Rana Tanveer Hussain said the federal government is working on a comprehensive wheat policy for 2026–2030 aimed at strengthening food security through structural reforms.
He said the upcoming policy will focus on digital traceability, improved supply chain monitoring, transparency and sustained price stability, with enhanced coordination between federal and provincial governments.
The minister also directed provinces to ensure strict market monitoring during Ramadan to prevent any unnecessary increase in flour prices.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to stable wheat availability, protection of farmers’ interests and maintaining affordable prices for consumers nationwide.
