ISLAMABAD, November 4, 2026: The federal cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has approved the transfer of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister’s powers to the provincial governor during an emergency, alongside decisions on redesigned Pakistani currency notes and replacing the Rs10 banknote with a coin.

According to a statement issued following the cabinet meeting, the governor will exercise the transferred powers to manage routine administrative affairs during the emergency and facilitate governance in the province.

The cabinet said the arrangement was intended to ensure the smooth functioning of provincial administration and improve governance. Under the decision, the governor will submit a monthly report to the federal government reviewing the exercise of these powers.

The cabinet expressed hope that the governor and the advisory council would work towards improving public welfare and maintaining law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

In another major decision, the federal cabinet approved new designs for Pakistani currency notes following a detailed briefing on the proposed changes.

Officials informed the cabinet that artists and designers had been consulted during the design process, while a cabinet committee constituted by the prime minister had also sought input from relevant stakeholders.

The redesigned banknotes will incorporate enhanced security features to prevent counterfeiting. Modern materials will also be introduced to improve durability and extend the circulation life of the notes.

The cabinet additionally approved replacing the existing Rs10 banknote with a coin.

Separately, the cabinet ratified a defence cooperation agreement between Pakistan and Kuwait, originally signed on June 11, 2023, to strengthen bilateral collaboration in defence-related areas.

The statement said the Kuwaiti government had ratified the agreement on July 19.

The federal cabinet also endorsed decisions taken during previous meetings of the Cabinet Committee on State-Owned Enterprises and the Cabinet Committee for Disposal of Legislative Cases.
