ADDIS ABABA, June 22, 2026: Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party has secured a major victory in the country’s 7th General Elections, winning 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, according to official results announced by the National Election Board of Ethiopia.
The results, announced at a media briefing in Addis Ababa, give the Prosperity Party a clear parliamentary mandate to form a new government under Ethiopia’s constitutional framework. The election involved more than 54 million registered voters, according to the election board.
The Prosperity Party won seats across several regions, including 167 in Oromia, 117 in Amhara, 35 in Southern Ethiopia, 28 in Central Ethiopia, 20 in Addis Ababa, 19 in Somali, 17 in Southwest Ethiopia, 13 in Sidama, eight in Benishangul-Gumuz, seven in Afar, three in Gambella, and two each in Dire Dawa and Harari.
Opposition parties and independent candidates collectively secured the remaining 48 parliamentary seats. These included candidates from the Ethiopian Unity Party, Afar People’s Party, Gumuz People’s Democratic Party, National Movement of Amhara and New Generation Party.
The Prosperity Party also recorded strong gains in regional council elections. According to the announced results, the party won 523 of 528 seats in Oromia, 257 of 277 in Amhara, 214 of 252 in the Somali region, 182 in South Ethiopia, 176 in Gambella, 175 in Sidama, 161 in Dire Dawa, 145 in Benishangul-Gumuz, 144 in South West Ethiopia, 143 in Central Ethiopia, 134 in Addis Ababa, 124 in Afar and 32 in Harari.
The elections were held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 constituencies for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils.
Election officials said the process was conducted peacefully and transparently. International observer missions, including those from the African Union and IGAD, also endorsed the overall electoral process, according to the statement.
