Milk is a staple in many households, but its appearance alone cannot confirm whether it is pure. Simple home checks can provide an initial indication of possible milk adulteration, including the presence of water, starch or detergent, although laboratory testing remains the most reliable method.

Consumers can also assess milk by checking its smell, taste, consistency and source. Unusually thin or thick milk, or milk with an unusual smell or taste, may warrant further testing.

How to Check for Added Water

Water is among the common substances used to dilute milk. One basic home method is to place a drop of milk on a clean, smooth and slightly inclined surface.

If the drop moves slowly and leaves a white trail, it may indicate relatively thicker milk. If it runs down the surface very quickly, it could suggest a higher water content.

However, this method cannot confirm adulteration and should only be treated as an initial indication.

Checking for Possible Detergent

To check for possible detergent contamination, take a small amount of milk in a clean glass, add roughly the same amount of water and gently shake the mixture.

If it produces an unusually large amount of foam that remains for some time, detergent may be present. However, ordinary milk can also produce foam when shaken, so this test is not conclusive.

How to Check for Starch

Starch may sometimes be added to milk to make it appear thicker. A basic test involves adding a few drops of iodine to a small quantity of milk.

If the milk turns blue or blue-black, it may indicate the presence of starch. A laboratory test is still required for reliable confirmation.

What to Check When Buying Milk

Consumers should not judge milk quality solely by its color or price. When buying packaged milk, check the seal, manufacturing date and expiry date.

Milk should also be stored at an appropriate temperature after purchase. If it has an unusual smell, taste or consistency, consumers should avoid using it.
