THATTA: Speakers paid tribute to social activist, doctor, journalist and columnist Dr Aslam Azad at a ceremony marking his 61st birth anniversary in Thatta on Monday, describing his decades-long resilience as a source of hope and inspiration.
The event was organised jointly by the Sindhi Adabi Sangat and the National Press Club, Thatta, at the National Press Club Hall in Makli. Speakers highlighted Dr Azad’s contributions to social and cultural activities and praised his determination to remain socially engaged despite being paralysed for more than three decades.
Life Marked by Resilience
Dr Aslam Azad was left completely paralysed following a road accident on December 29, 1991. Despite being bedridden since the accident, he has continued to take an active interest in social, cultural and intellectual affairs.
Former Pakistan Peoples Party senator Sassui Palijo, addressing the gathering, said she had regarded Dr Azad as a role model over the years and had learned from his approach to life.
She said his resilience could serve as an example for young people facing uncertainty and difficulties about their future.
Historian Dr Muhammad Ali Manji described Dr Azad’s life as a journey shaped by exceptional courage. He said that despite facing difficult circumstances, Azad had continued to maintain hope and determination.
Veteran politician Dada Abdul Qadir Ranto called him a “crusader of hope and dignity”, particularly at a time when frustration and despair were affecting society.
Concern Over Sindh’s Future
Artist Hameed Maheranvi and journalists Ramzan Memon and Mehboob Brohi said Dr Azad regularly reads books on history, culture and politics and remains concerned about the future of Sindh.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Aslam Azad thanked the National Press Club office-bearers and members of Sindhi Adabi Sangat for honouring him.
He said the current situation in Sindh was not encouraging but urged young people not to lose hope and to continue working hard.
Journalism and Student Activism
Dr Azad has worked as a correspondent for the Urdu newspaper Jang and Sindh Daily Jago. He also served as president of the student wing of the Awami Tehreek at LUMHS Jamshoro from 1984 to 1989.
