District Jail Layyah has upgraded its barber shop and barber training centre with support from local philanthropists, aiming to equip inmates with practical skills to improve their employment prospects after release.
The facility was inaugurated on Wednesday at the jail premises. Superintendent District Jail Layyah, Malik Kamran Haider Awan, said the initiative is part of broader efforts to focus on rehabilitation alongside custodial responsibilities. He noted that vocational training is intended not only to meet inmates’ daily needs inside the jail but also to help them secure lawful livelihoods once they return to society.

According to jail authorities, the upgraded centre will provide structured training to inmates, enabling them to learn a marketable skill that can be used after their sentences are completed.
Focus on welfare and rehabilitation
Malik Kamran Haider Awan said the jail administration has prioritised improving living conditions and addressing long-standing issues faced by prisoners and their families. Measures include better oversight during prisoner visits, monitoring of health and hygiene standards, and timely redress of complaints.
He added that arrangements have been made to ensure adequate food, healthcare, and accommodation for inmates, with medical staff available round the clock and basic medicines provided within the facility.
Officials said rehabilitation, positive behavioural development, and the welfare of inmates remain key objectives of the current administration. The initiative has drawn appreciation from members of the local community and social circles, who described it as a constructive step towards reform-oriented prison management.
