BARBADOS: Former South African AB de Villiers has suggested that India’s Virat Kohl change his batting position after the 3,524-year-old T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.
In the three matches so far – against Ireland, Pakistan and USA – Kohli missed out after taking one, four and zero wickets respectively. While many pundits have suggested that the 35-year-old should continue playing the opener, Villiers believes he needs to change his batting order.
In an interview with the YouTube channel, the South African great said that Kohli is still the best batsman in the world in the middle overs and India is ranked No. 3 because he will play on better wickets in the Caribbean.
“I always ask you to take chances with Virat at number 3, Zeroor. He is the best player in the world in the middle overs,” he said.
India have been waiting for the ICC trophy since 2013. They were close to winning the ODI World Cup in 2023, but Travis Head dashed their dream in the final in Ahmedabad. De Villiers believes that the Indian team now has a chance to end their trophy drought.
“Just make sure you throw the first shot. In the last world championship, I think they have been a little conservative, they have felt like they have come into a game. They are such a quality team that I think they can take a little risk at the beginning of the game to gain momentum, because when momentum is built, it can’t be seen.
