ISLAMABAD, September 29, 2026: Pakistani rapper, dancer and choreographer Daniya Kanwal has appeared on a prominent billboard in New York’s Times Square after being selected as Spotify’s EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador for the third quarter of 2026, marking another international milestone in her emerging music career.

The Karachi-born artist was featured on the billboard on September 26 as part of Spotify’s initiative to promote women musicians and expand their reach to international audiences. Her music has also been included in several curated playlists on the streaming platform.

Known for combining hip hop with South Asian musical influences, Daniya explores identity, personal freedom and the experiences of young women through her lyrics.

Her selection comes amid substantial growth in her audience on Spotify following the release of her debut album, Kanwal, earlier this year.

Daniya Kanwal records sharp growth in Spotify streams

According to figures shared by Spotify, Daniya’s listener count has increased by more than 3,470 percent over the past year, while streams of her music have risen by over 6,920 percent during the same period.

Her featured EQUAL Pakistan track, Mic Check, is part of her seven-track debut album, which introduced listeners to her distinctive approach to contemporary Pakistani hip hop.

The artist’s music draws on personal experiences and social themes, combining observational lyrics with sounds influenced by her South Asian background.

Spotify data also shows that approximately 70 percent of Daniya’s listeners are between 18 and 34 years old, indicating a predominantly younger audience.

Beyond Pakistan, her music is attracting listeners in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United Arab Emirates, which are among the leading international markets for her songs.

From breaking champion to Pakistani hip hop artist

Before pursuing a career in rap music, Daniya established herself in competitive hip hop dance under the name B-Girl Destiny.

In 2022, she became Pakistan’s first female national champion at the inaugural international breaking championship, an achievement that helped establish her presence in the country’s emerging breaking scene.

Her transition from dance to music subsequently opened opportunities for collaborations with established Pakistani performers.

Earlier in 2026, she appeared on the HBL Pakistan Super League Season 11 anthem, Khelenge Beat Pe, alongside Atif Aslam, the Sabri Sisters and Aima Baig.

She also contributed to the anthem as a lyricist.

According to Spotify, Khelenge Beat Pe is currently her most-streamed track on the platform, followed by Bin Ranjha, Jihadi Aurat and Meri Jaan.

Her involvement in the PSL anthem brought her work to a broader audience, while her debut album has helped develop her identity as an independent hip hop artist.

Daniya Kanwal speaks about representing women through music

Reacting to her selection as Spotify’s EQUAL Pakistan Ambassador, Daniya described the recognition as an opportunity to represent women who want greater freedom to express their experiences through music.

She said the EQUAL initiative provides a space for conversations about subjects that women are often discouraged from discussing openly, including freedom, identity, ambition and personal experiences.

“I love what EQUAL represents because it feels like a girls’ night where every conversation is allowed, from freedom and our bodies to shame, desire, ambition and everything we’re usually told not to talk about,” she said.

Daniya added that women should not have to choose between different aspects of their personalities or limit their expression to meet social expectations.

She expressed gratitude for being included among the women musicians recognised through the initiative, describing the experience as surreal and a privilege.

Spotify highlights Daniya’s contribution to Pakistan’s hip hop scene

Rutaba Yaqub, Artist and Label Partnerships Manager at Spotify for Pakistan and the UAE, said Daniya’s music reflects her personal experiences and South Asian identity while exploring new forms of expression within hip hop.

“Daniya brings a fearless energy to Pakistan’s hip hop scene,” Yaqub said.

She added that Spotify’s EQUAL Pakistan initiative aims to support artists such as Daniya in reaching new listeners and presenting their work to wider audiences.

The EQUAL Pakistan programme has been operating for more than four years, featuring both established and emerging women musicians from different genres.

Through artist recognition, playlist placements and international promotional campaigns, the initiative seeks to increase the visibility of women in Pakistan’s music industry.

Daniya’s appearance in Times Square places her among the Pakistani women artists featured through the programme’s international promotional activities, as her music continues to reach audiences beyond the country.
