Updated Scholarship Benefits
- €1,400 monthly scholarship payment
- Contributions toward health, accident and personal liability insurance
- Travel allowance, subject to DAAD conditions; an application is required when the funding period exceeds six months
- €460 research allowance for funding periods longer than six months
- Monthly rent subsidy may be available for funding periods exceeding six months
- Family allowance may be available for accompanying family members when the funding period exceeds six months
- Additional support may be available for justified costs related to a disability or chronic illness
- Green Mobility Top Up or reimbursement of eligible carbon-offset payments for air travel
Language Support
For funding periods of more than six months, DAAD may also provide:
- Fees for an online German language course
- A German language course in Germany before the research project, where DAAD considers it necessary
- An allowance for a personally selected German language course
- Reimbursement of TestDaF or DSH examination fees under the programme conditions
Selection Criteria
Applications are assessed by an independent committee of specialist scientists. The main criteria are:
Academic qualifications
- Academic performance and grade development
- Academic progress
- Knowledge of the relevant teaching or working language
- Publications, lectures and conference papers, where applicable
Research project quality
- Originality, relevance and topicality of the proposal
- Quality of preparation and research plan
- Suitability of the German host institution
- Initial contact with the academic host
- Feasibility and consistency of the proposed schedule
- Integration with the applicant’s wider doctoral research, where applicable
Applicant potential
- Career prospects and the value of the research stay
- Academic and personal motivation
- Relevant German-language skills
- Non-academic skills, knowledge and civic engagement
DAAD also takes equal-opportunity considerations into account during the selection process.
Important Correction
One useful detail missing from the earlier version is that doctoral applicants generally must have started their doctorate no more than three years before the application deadline, while postdoctoral applicants should have completed their doctorate no more than four years before the deadline. Applicants who have been resident in Germany for more than 15 months at the application deadline are not eligible.
