More than 100 people gathered near San Francisco’s Ocean Beach to collectively scream toward the Pacific Ocean, using an unusual event to release frustration and anger over everyday pressures.
The event, called “Guttural Scream at the Sea,” was organized by local resident Daniel Egan, who said he felt the need for a powerful scream himself and decided to invite others to join him.
Rising Rents and AI Among Reasons to Scream
The event’s promotional material listed several reasons for participants to let out their frustrations, including rising rents, irritation with artificial intelligence, anger and simply the feeling that screaming can provide relief.
Before the group’s collective scream, organizers held a dedicated screaming competition. Participants were judged on the volume, duration and style of their screams.
Winner Records 121.9 Decibels
Olivia Guglielmotto won the competition after her scream was measured at 121.9 decibels, reportedly coming close to the 129-decibel world record.
As her prize, she received a small megaphone.
The winner said her scream was not directed at any single issue but was instead for “the whole world.”
The unusual gathering offered participants a communal way to express frustration, with the Pacific Ocean serving as the backdrop for the collective release.
