PESHAWAR: A consumer court in Peshawar has ordered Easypaisa Digital Bank to refund Rs40,000 to a customer after finding that unauthorized transactions were made from his account and that the payment system failed to adequately protect his funds.

Consumer Court Judge Nasrullah Gandapur issued the written ex parte judgment on a complaint filed over three disputed transactions.

The court directed Easypaisa Digital Bank to immediately return Rs40,000 that had been transferred from the complainant’s account without authorization.

It also ordered the bank to pay Rs25,000 to the complainant as compensation for mental distress, inconvenience and legal expenses.

In addition, the court imposed a further Rs25,000 penalty on the bank, payable to the government over negligence identified in the case.

According to the judgment, the complainant, Fahad ur Rehman, a Class 10 student, had filed the case under the Consumer Protection Act.

He told the court that when he went to withdraw Rs50,000 for household needs on February 14, he found only Rs11,000 remaining in his account.

After checking the account history, he discovered three separate transactions which he said he had neither carried out nor authorized.

The complainant also maintained that his account had not been hacked and that he had received no transaction notifications from Easypaisa.

He said he contacted the Easypaisa helpline but did not receive satisfactory assistance.

No representative of Easypaisa appeared before the court, after which the proceedings continued ex parte.

The complainant submitted transaction receipts, emails, legal notices and other documentary evidence in support of his claim.

The court concluded that Easypaisa Digital Bank had failed to safeguard its electronic payment system and protect the customer’s funds.
