ISLAMABAD: Takhleeq Foundation, in collaboration with Awaz Foundation, convened a consultative meeting bringing together representatives of civil society organizations (CSOs), legal experts, and other stakeholders to discuss the enabling environment for civil society in Pakistan.
Participants highlighted a range of challenges affecting the work and sustainability of CSOs, including complex registration and renewal procedures, delays in obtaining No Objection Certificates (NOCs), restrictions on operational space, difficulties in opening and maintaining bank accounts, tax exemption issues, and the continued shrinking of civic space.
The consultation emphasized the need for transparent, inclusive, and predictable policies that support the effective functioning of civil society organizations while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Speakers also called for stronger coordination among relevant government departments to streamline administrative processes and reduce procedural hurdles that affect nonprofit organizations.
Legal experts stressed the importance of strengthening legal and institutional frameworks to safeguard civic freedoms and create an enabling environment in which civil society organizations can operate effectively and contribute to social development.
Participants concluded that protecting civic space and improving collaboration between the government and civil society are essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of CSOs across Pakistan.
