A monumental infrastructure project – the Chitral-Shandur Road – is poised to revolutionize connectivity, tourism, and economic prospects for Northern Pakistan.
The strategic 150-kilometer road will dramatically reduce travel time between Chitral and the iconic Shandur Pass – home to the world’s highest polo ground – from bone-jarring five to six hours to a smooth journey of approximately 2.5 hours.
Previously, the route was a precarious dirt track, often rendered impassable for months by heavy snowfall and landslides. This severely limited economic opportunities and restricted tourist access from Chitral to Gilgit-Baltistan.
The new road, being constructed with modern engineering techniques to withstand the rigors of the mountainous terrain, will ensure year-round accessibility.
The Shandur Polo Festival is expected to see a massive surge in attendance due to improved access. The upgraded road will allow more domestic and international tourists to witness this unique cultural spectacle and explore the pristine beauty of the surroundings.
