Awarapan 2, starring Emraan Hashmi, has received clearance from India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) after the filmmakers made several edits, including the removal of nearly four minutes of footage. The film has been awarded a U/A 16+ certificate ahead of its theatrical release on August 14, 2026.
According to Indian media reports, the CBFC directed the filmmakers to make multiple changes involving violent scenes, language, and mandatory health warnings before granting certification.
CBFC orders multiple edits
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the film on August 5, 2026, with a final runtime of 140 minutes and 20 seconds.
Before certification, the board reportedly instructed the production team to implement nine modifications, including reducing the intensity of violent sequences, removing certain objectionable words from both audio and subtitles, and incorporating mandatory warnings related to smoking and drug use.
Mandatory warnings added
The CBFC also directed the filmmakers to display the Hindi title prominently and include public awareness messages about the harmful effects of drugs throughout the film.
In addition, anti-smoking warnings must remain visible during relevant scenes, while an advisory related to child trafficking has also been incorporated as part of the board’s requirements.
Four minutes of footage removed
According to reports, several action scenes were shortened, with one sequence reportedly reduced by nearly 50 percent to lessen the depiction of violence.
A scene involving drug consumption was also modified, while the end credits were re-edited to better match the background score.
Overall, approximately four minutes of footage were removed and an additional 20 seconds of content were modified, although the film’s official runtime remained unchanged at 140 minutes and 20 seconds.
Sequel to the 2007 film
Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 features Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani, and Shabana Azmi in leading roles.
The film is a sequel to the 2007 hit Awarapan and continues its emotional narrative with a darker, revenge-driven storyline.
Produced by Vishesh Bhatt, the film reunites composer Mithoon and lyricist Sayeed Quadri, with refreshed versions of the popular songs “To Phir Aao” and “Tera Mera Rishta”, alongside several new tracks.
