RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s military leadership and armed forces on Monday paid tribute to Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, on his 78th martyrdom anniversary, honouring his courage and sacrifice during the First Kashmir War.
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of the Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces; Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf; and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu joined the Armed Forces of Pakistan in commemorating the national war hero, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations.
The military said Captain Sarwar’s sacrifice remained a lasting symbol of courage, resilience and devotion to the country.
Captain Sarwar’s Final Battle in Kashmir
Captain Muhammad Sarwar was martyred on July 27, 1948, while leading his troops at Tilpatra in Azad Kashmir during the First Kashmir War.
According to official accounts, he led his men from the front and continued advancing under intense enemy fire before losing his life in the line of duty.
He was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military decoration for valour, becoming its first recipient. His martyrdom anniversary has since been observed annually to remember his role in the defence of the country.
The military described his conduct during the battle as an example of exceptional bravery, tactical skill and unwavering commitment to duty.
Military Leadership Honours Enduring Legacy
In its tribute, ISPR said Captain Sarwar’s supreme sacrifice continued to inspire serving personnel as well as future generations.
The armed forces said his legacy represented the highest principles of duty, honour and patriotism and remained deeply respected by the people of Pakistan.
Captain Sarwar is remembered as one of the country’s most prominent military heroes, with institutions, roads and public places named in recognition of his service.
The commemoration also highlighted the broader national remembrance of military personnel who lost their lives while serving the country.
The armed forces said Captain Sarwar’s courage and selfless devotion would remain an enduring part of Pakistan’s military history.
