Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has topped the global automotive innovation ranking in the Automotive INNOVATIONS Report 2026, becoming the first Chinese automaker to achieve the distinction since the study was launched two decades ago.

The report, published by Germany-based Center of Automotive Management (CAM), placed BYD first with 157 points, ahead of Volkswagen, which scored 143 points, and Mercedes-Benz, which ranked third with 134 points. The ranking assesses innovation performance across the automotive industry and is widely followed by manufacturers and industry analysts.

According to CAM, BYD’s top position marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the global automotive sector, reflecting the growing role of Chinese automakers in vehicle technology and innovation.

The Automotive INNOVATIONS study has been conducted annually since 2005, evaluating developments across areas such as electrification, connectivity, autonomous driving and vehicle efficiency. This year’s results represent the first time a Chinese manufacturer has secured the top position in the overall ranking.

BYD has expanded rapidly in recent years through its focus on new energy vehicles (NEVs), including battery electric and plug-in hybrid models. The company has also increased its presence in international markets as competition in the global automotive industry continues to intensify.

The latest ranking highlights the changing dynamics of the automotive sector, with innovation in electric mobility and advanced vehicle technologies playing an increasingly important role in determining industry leadership.
