ISLAMABAD, August 13, 2026: The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) marked Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day with the launch of a nationwide tree plantation campaign, recognition of flood-response workers and a renewed focus on digital reforms in its payment system.
The ceremony was held at BISP Headquarters in Islamabad and attended by Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid, Secretary BISP Amer Ali Ahmad, Additional Secretary Dr Asmat Nawaz, officials, beneficiary families and children enrolled in the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif Programme.
Senator Rubina Khalid formally launched the “Green Pakistan, Benazir Pakistan” campaign by planting a sapling at the BISP headquarters.
She said Pakistan was facing serious climate-related challenges and called for tree plantation to be treated as a national priority rather than a symbolic activity limited to Independence Day.
According to the chairperson, the campaign will continue throughout the year with the aim of encouraging communities to plant and protect more trees.
BISP Highlights Digital Wallet Reforms
During her address, Senator Rubina Khalid said BISP had introduced major reforms in its payment system, with the Digital Wallet becoming a key part of the programme’s efforts to improve transparency and convenience for beneficiaries.
She said the interoperability system would allow eligible women to receive BISP payments through authorised bank agents across different cities and locations.
The reforms are aimed at reducing difficulties faced by beneficiaries while collecting payments and making the process more accessible.
BISP currently provides social protection support to more than 10 million deserving families across Pakistan, according to the programme.
Independence Day Celebrations With Taleemi Wazaif Children
As part of the ceremony, Senator Rubina Khalid, Secretary BISP Amer Ali Ahmad and Additional Secretary Dr Asmat Nawaz cut an Independence Day cake with children enrolled in the Benazir Taleemi Wazaif Programme.
Gifts were also distributed among the children.
The chairperson said the programme remained committed to supporting vulnerable families through income assistance, education and broader social protection initiatives.
Swat Flood Workers Honoured
BISP also presented appreciation certificates to doctors, paramedical staff and volunteers for their services during last year’s floods in Swat.
Senator Rubina Khalid praised their contribution during the emergency and described those serving communities in difficult circumstances as national heroes.
She also paid tribute to the Pakistan Armed Forces for their sacrifices in safeguarding the country’s defence, peace and stability.
The ceremony concluded with special prayers for Pakistan’s peace, progress, stability and prosperity.
