Oct 13: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that the unsafe use of artificial intelligence could contribute to a rise in cyberattacks next year, as concerns grow over the misuse of the technology by malicious actors.
Speaking in an interview with ABC News, Gates said AI-driven cyberattacks are likely to emerge as one of the most significant threats in the near future.
He said the more immediate concern is not artificial intelligence becoming uncontrollable on its own, but rather the possibility of people using it for harmful purposes and removing safeguards designed to limit misuse.
Gates stressed the need for stronger restrictions and more effective safety measures to prevent malicious actors from using AI for cyberattacks and biological terrorism.
He warned that advanced AI models could have serious consequences if they fall into the wrong hands without adequate safeguards, particularly in the area of cybersecurity.
The Microsoft co-founder had also cautioned in August that the world was not sufficiently prepared for the major changes artificial intelligence could bring, especially its impact on employment.
Gates also disagreed with US President Donald Trump’s position that AI companies could effectively manage these risks through self-regulation and internal oversight.
He said the supervision of one of the most dangerous technologies ever created by humans should not be left solely to the companies developing it, arguing that existing measures are not sufficient to keep society safe.
