Pakistan’s team selection for the second Test against the West Indies surprised fans and cricket experts alike, with experienced fast bowler Mohammad Abbas being left out despite an outstanding performance in the opening Test.
Following Pakistan’s defeat in the first Test, the team management made four changes to the playing XI. However, the omission of Abbas drew the most attention and sparked widespread criticism on social media.
Mohammad Abbas claimed eight wickets in the first Test, including a brilliant five-wicket haul, making him Pakistan’s standout bowler in the match.
Addressing the decision, captain Babar Azam clarified that Abbas was fully fit and had not been dropped due to injury or form.
According to Babar, the decision was made purely on the basis of pitch conditions and team combination, with Pakistan opting to strengthen the spin attack by including Sajid Khan while handing young fast bowler Ubaid Shah his Test debut.
Since returning to Pakistan’s Test squad in December 2024, Mohammad Abbas has taken 28 wickets in five Test matches, making him the country’s most successful fast bowler during that period. He has also maintained an impressive bowling average and economy rate.
Abbas has consistently performed well even on slower pitches in the UAE and Bangladesh, raising further questions among fans about his exclusion.
Pakistan’s next Test assignment is scheduled in England, where Abbas’ extensive county cricket experience is expected to make him a valuable asset.
