RAWALPINDI: Pakistan T20I skipper Babar Azam is all set to rewrite the record books in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand starting on April 18.
Babar wants to go through several stages. Three T20I wins against New Zealand would make him the most successful T20I captain and equal Uganda’s Brian Masaba’s record of 44 wins as captain. Babar now has 42 wins as captain along with England’s Eoin Morgan and Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan.
Also, if Babar takes part in five matches of the series, he will match Aaron Finch’s record of 76 matches in charge of his country in the most T20Is in history. Currently, Babar has led Pakistan in 71 T20I matches.
Babar’s ambition is to break Finch’s record for most runs as a T20I captain. Finch won 76 innings as Australia’s T20I captain with just 42 out of 2,236. Babar, who has amassed 2,195 runs in 65 innings as captain, is aiming to surpass this milestone.
Babar is also looking to become the first Pakistani batsman to break 4000 runs in T20I cricket. With 302 runs to reach this milestone, Babar is now on 3698 runs. He joins Virat Kohli (4037) and Rohit Sharma (3974) in the list of highest scorers in T20I cricket. With Kohli’s score just shy of 340, Babar sees the series against New Zealand as a great opportunity to impress the Indian batting maestro.
