ISLAMABAD, October 27, 2026: Austria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening trade, investment and diplomatic relations with Pakistan, with a renewed focus on cooperation in renewable energy, railway technology, healthcare and other key economic sectors.
Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera outlined these priorities while addressing a reception in Islamabad on Tuesday to celebrate Austria’s National Day 2026.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik attended the event as guest of honour, alongside senior government officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, business representatives and other distinguished guests.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Kutschera highlighted more than 72 years of diplomatic relations between Austria and Pakistan, describing mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation as the foundations of their longstanding partnership.
He said Austria was keen to expand its economic engagement with Pakistan, building on existing cooperation in hydropower, green energy, railway technology, medical devices, project management and the food and beverage industry.
The ambassador identified Austria’s Refocus Austria initiative as an important platform for exploring new business opportunities and strengthening commercial partnerships.
He noted that Austrian companies had demonstrated considerable interest in Pakistan’s market, particularly during the EU–Pakistan High-Level Business Forum held in Islamabad in April 2026.
Austrian business representatives constituted the third-largest national delegation at the forum, reflecting the potential for greater bilateral investment and commercial cooperation.
Kutschera also announced that both countries were working towards reconvening the Austrian-Pakistani Joint Working Group on Economic Cooperation, with an in-person meeting expected in Islamabad in spring 2027.
The proposed meeting is intended to identify new investment opportunities, strengthen business connections and advance economic cooperation between the two countries.
Referring to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit to Vienna in February 2026, the ambassador said the visit had provided fresh momentum to bilateral relations.
During the visit, undertaken at the invitation of Austrian Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation while supporting multilateralism and the United Nations system.
The ambassador also highlighted Austria’s longstanding policy of permanent neutrality, adopted in 1955, stressing that military neutrality did not imply indifference towards international developments.
He said Austria remained committed to international law, human rights and the principle that the rule of law must guide international relations.
Kutschera welcomed Austria’s election on June 3, 2026, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2029 term.
He said the successful candidacy followed a 15-year diplomatic campaign under the motto Partnership – Dialogue – Trust and expressed gratitude to countries that supported Austria’s election.
The ambassador also highlighted Vienna’s importance as one of the four official headquarters locations of the United Nations and a major international centre for diplomacy, science and technology.
Discussing global challenges, he referred to ongoing conflicts, rising energy and raw material prices, and growing pressure on food affordability.
He appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and mediation, including through the Islamabad Talks and engagement with regional capitals.
Following his address, Austrian Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger delivered a video message outlining Austria’s priorities and guiding principles for its upcoming membership of the UN Security Council.
Beyond political and economic cooperation, the ambassador emphasised the importance of cultural, educational and people-to-people exchanges in strengthening bilateral relations.
He highlighted several initiatives organised or supported by the Austrian Embassy, including its Dialogue Residency programme, which facilitated academic engagements involving Austrian law professor Stefan Hammer.
Other activities included literary events featuring Austrian author Gertraud Klemm and a lecture and piano concert by Dr. Marko Kölbl of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Austrian short films were also screened during recent editions of the EU Film Festival, while jazz musicians Michaela Rabitsch and Robert Pawlik performed in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.
The ambassador praised the Embassy-supported theatre production Teri Hastí, Terá Hunar, organised by Theatre Wallay to promote women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship.
Funded by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative reached communities in Chiniot and Gujar Khan before concluding at the Pakistan Austria Fachhochschule in Haripur.
Kutschera described the Pakistan Austria Fachhochschule, a university of applied sciences, as an important example of educational cooperation between the two countries.
He also recalled Austria’s historical contributions to Pakistan’s cultural and mountaineering heritage, citing Austrian financial and logistical assistance in developing the Malam Jabba ski resort.
Concluding his address, the ambassador reiterated Austria’s commitment to deepening existing partnerships and establishing new avenues of cooperation with Pakistan.
He thanked Austrian and Pakistani colleagues, institutions and partners for their contributions to strengthening bilateral relations.
The reception concluded with a renewed commitment to promoting friendship, economic cooperation, cultural exchange and closer diplomatic engagement between Austria and Pakistan.
