Pakistani singer Asim Azhar has clarified his position after facing criticism for thanking social media personality Rajab Butt, who shared a lip-sync video using Azhar’s new cover version of “Tu Hai Wohi Dil Ne Jise Apna Kaha.”
The reaction began after Butt posted a video on Instagram featuring Azhar’s song in the background. Azhar responded in the comments by thanking him, which led to criticism from some social media users because of controversies previously linked to Butt.
Azhar later issued a clarification on Instagram, saying that thanking someone for using his music or responding to support did not mean he endorsed that person’s views, values or actions.
According to Dawn Images, Azhar said he “should’ve been more aware” and “read the room better,” while adding that his response was only a gesture of appreciation.
The singer said he understood the concerns raised by some of his fans and supporters. He added that his intention was simply to respond with kindness to support for his music.
Azhar also addressed the matter in a lighter tone, asking fans to continue enjoying his new music and “sweet mangoes.”
The debate followed mixed reactions to Azhar’s new cover version of the classic song. While some listeners appreciated the release, others criticised the remake and said it did not match the original.
Despite Azhar’s clarification, discussion over the matter continued on social media, with some users questioning his public interaction with Butt and others defending his response as a routine acknowledgement of support.
