KARACHI: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi held a condolence reference to remember renowned film, television and theatre artist, singer and musician Khalid Nizami, with prominent figures from the country’s arts and cultural community paying tribute to his contributions.
A special showreel documenting highlights from Nizami’s artistic career was screened during the gathering, featuring his work in film, television, theatre, singing, music and composition.
Artists Pay Tribute to Khalid Nizami
Arts Council President Mohammad Ahmed Shah expressed condolences to Nizami’s family on behalf of the council, its members and the wider artist community.
He described Khalid Nizami as a versatile and exceptionally talented performer, particularly praising his comic timing and distinctive dialogue delivery. He said Nizami’s abilities extended beyond comedy and included film, television, theatre and music.
Shah also highlighted Nizami’s understanding of performance and dialogue delivery, saying even brief lines could become memorable through his artistic skill. He added that Nizami was also deeply involved in music and composition.
The event was attended by Chairman Drama Committee Shehzad Raza Naqvi, Chairman Music Committee Amjad Hussain Shah, Chairman Special Committee Iqbal Latif, Dr Huma Mir, Sadat Ali Jafri, Shakeel Siddiqui, Rauf Lala, Nadeem Jafri, Zeba Shehnaz, Aslam Sheikh, Shahid Nizami, Younus Memon, Rauf Alam, Tasneem Rana and other members of the arts community. The proceedings were moderated by Noman Khan.
Colleagues Recall His Versatility
Comedian Rauf Lala described Khalid Nizami as a highly talented and melodious artist whose work earned recognition in theatre and film. He recalled Nizami’s memorable characters and dialogues and shared personal memories of their friendship.
Shehzad Raza Naqvi said Nizami had a strong presence in the artistic community and recalled how fellow performers sometimes felt nervous around him because of his demanding approach to their work. He also noted that several members of Nizami’s family had pursued careers in the arts.
Amjad Hussain Shah said Nizami’s work had attracted audiences beyond Pakistan, including viewers in neighbouring countries. He said the showreel screened at the event offered only a glimpse of Nizami’s extensive career and that his body of work was substantial enough to warrant a comprehensive documentary.
Nadeem Jafri highlighted Nizami’s abilities as a musician, composer, singer, writer and actor, saying his creative ideas often translated into memorable lines and performances.
Actor Aslam Sheikh also praised Nizami’s contributions to film, television, theatre and music, particularly composition. He said Nizami’s artistic influence was reflected in his children, who have pursued different creative fields, and stressed the importance of preserving his work for younger generations.
Son Recalls His Father’s Philosophy
Khalid Nizami’s son, Shahid Nizami, said members of the Arts Council had become part of their family over the years.
He said people knew his father in different capacities—as a comedian, writer or character actor—but his family knew him primarily as a good human being.
Recalling his father’s advice, Shahid said Khalid Nizami had encouraged him to focus on becoming a good person rather than simply seeking greatness.
Chairman Special Committee Iqbal Latif said remembering an artist carries a responsibility to preserve and pass on their artistic legacy to future generations.
The condolence reference concluded with prayers for Khalid Nizami and tributes to his contributions to Pakistan’s film, television, theatre and music.
