Former Pakistani actress Areej Fatima has opened up about why she chose to keep her head covered, revealing how her cancer diagnosis prompted deep reflection on faith, life and the importance of hijab.

In a video clip from a recent interview circulating on social media, Areej discussed her cancer diagnosis and the reasons behind her decision to cover her head.

She explained that when she was diagnosed with cancer, one of her biggest fears was losing her hair. She said she had always been proud of her hair and worried about losing it, describing it as an important part of a woman’s confidence.

Areej recalled repeatedly telling herself that she would start wearing hijab if she ever became bald. Although her hair did not fall out, the experience made her reconsider that thinking.

She said the realisation brought regret, as she questioned why she had linked wearing hijab to losing her hair rather than making the decision earlier.

The former actress also described her experience of performing the ritual washing of deceased people as a turning point in her life. The experience made her reflect on life’s uncertainty and the possibility that circumstances can change at any moment.

Areej said her illness was eventually diagnosed and treated quickly, adding that the ease with which she received medical attention was a blessing from Allah.

Addressing people who suggested that illness was punishment for sins, she rejected that interpretation, saying that illness is part of one’s destiny and urging people not to lose their trust in Allah during difficult times.

Her account highlights how her personal health experience influenced her outlook on faith, mortality and her decision to keep her head covered.
