Apple has introduced a new device leasing programme in the United States, allowing eligible customers to obtain selected iPhones, Macs, iPads and Apple Watches through monthly payments.
The Apple Upgrade programme, launched in partnership with financial technology company Klarna, replaces Apple’s previous iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments options for new applicants in the US.
Customers can apply for the programme through Apple’s official website, the Apple Store app or participating Apple retail stores in the United States.
Klarna conducts a soft credit check to assess eligibility. Apple says this initial check does not affect the applicant’s credit score, although customers must meet the programme’s financial and identification requirements.
How Much Do Apple Upgrade Leases Cost?
Starting monthly payments under the programme are:
- iPhone: From $17.99 per month
- Apple Watch: From $11.99 per month
- iPad: From $11.99 per month
- Mac: From $24.99 per month
iPhones and Apple Watches can be leased for 12 or 24 months, while Macs and iPads are available under 24- or 36-month agreements. Actual monthly payments vary depending on the device, configuration, lease duration and any eligible trade-in credit.
Customers Do Not Automatically Own the Device
Unlike a conventional instalment purchase, Apple Upgrade is a leasing arrangement. Klarna retains ownership of the device during the lease period.
At the end of the agreed term, customers can:
- Return the device and end the programme
- Return it and begin a new lease on an eligible newer model
- Make a separate lump-sum payment to purchase the existing device
Customers who simply complete all monthly lease payments do not automatically become the device’s owner.
AppleCare+ Is No Longer Included
AppleCare+ is not automatically included in Apple Upgrade monthly payments. Customers seeking accidental damage coverage or other protection must purchase an eligible AppleCare plan separately.
This differs from Apple’s previous iPhone Upgrade Program, which included AppleCare+ as part of the monthly cost.
Customers who use an eligible Apple Card to make lease payments can receive 3% Daily Cash, subject to Apple Card terms and availability.
Some Devices Are Excluded
Apple says the programme applies to selected current products rather than every device in its catalogue. Availability can vary according to model, storage configuration and lease term.
Reports indicate that some entry-level or older products may not be offered through the programme. Customers must check the Apple Upgrade option on the relevant product page to confirm eligibility before placing an order.
Programme Currently Limited to the United States
Apple Upgrade is currently a US-only programme. Applicants need a valid US billing address, Social Security number and an eligible US credit or debit card.
Apple has not announced that the Klarna-powered leasing programme is available in Pakistan or other international markets.
Although the scheme lowers the upfront cost of accessing a new Apple device, customers should compare the total lease payments, final purchase price, insurance costs and potential trade-in value before enrolling.
