Canadian poet, essayist and classical scholar Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday.

Carson was honoured for her bold and inventive body of work, which the academy said has created new forms for contemporary literature through a creative dialogue with the classical tradition.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson is known for combining poetry, essays, translation and classical literature in an unconventional literary style. Her work frequently draws on ancient Greek and Roman texts while exploring contemporary themes and forms.

The Nobel committee highlighted the distinctive way Carson connects the study of language and classical texts with creative writing.

Notable Works

Carson’s best-known books include Eros the Bittersweet, Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, Nox and Red Doc>.

Her 1998 work Autobiography of Red is particularly notable for its modern reimagining of classical mythology, while Eros the Bittersweet examines desire through the lens of ancient Greek literature.

Carson has also worked extensively as a translator and academic, with her career combining literary scholarship, teaching and creative writing.

Nobel Prize Worth 12 Million Swedish Kronor

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor, along with the Nobel medal and diploma.

Carson’s selection follows Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, who received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Literature Prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy, which selects the laureate based on the writer’s overall literary contribution.

The Literature Prize announcement follows the 2026 Nobel awards in Physiology or Medicine, Physics and Chemistry, announced earlier this week.

The Nobel Peace Prize is scheduled to be announced on October 9, while the Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on October 12.
