Archaeologists in Peru have discovered the skeleton of an adult near the ancient Huaca Pucllana pyramid in the capital Lima, with researchers believing the individual may have been buried as part of a religious offering.
The remains were found inside a canal connected to a sacred pool. Experts believe the burial may have taken place when the canal was being closed, offering new clues about the religious beliefs, burial practices and ceremonies of the ancient Lima civilization.
Skeleton Found Near Ancient Pyramid
Archaeologist Gladys Paz, who led the excavation, said the discovery could help researchers better understand religious ceremonies and practices carried out centuries ago.
The remains are believed to belong to a man. The body was placed on its left side, with the skull facing toward the pyramid and the Pacific Ocean.
Researchers believe the evidence may indicate that the individual was sacrificed during a religious ceremony, although further scientific analysis could provide additional details.
Ancient Lima Civilization
The Lima civilization flourished along Peru’s dry central coast between the first and seventh centuries AD, around 700 years before the rise of the Inca Empire.
Archaeologists say discoveries at sites such as Huaca Pucllana are important for understanding the religious beliefs, rituals and burial traditions of ancient societies.
