West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has declined to make himself available for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan despite being selected in the squad, dealing a setback to the hosts ahead of the series.
West Indies head coach Darren Sammy confirmed that Joseph chose not to accept his selection, adding that any further action regarding the matter would be decided by Cricket West Indies (CWI).
Sammy says Joseph turned down selection
Cricket West Indies had initially stated that Joseph was unavailable for personal reasons when announcing the squad.
However, Sammy later clarified that the fast bowler had recently returned from injury and had been included in the squad before deciding not to participate for undisclosed reasons.
“This matter is beyond my authority, and the board will make the decision,” Sammy said, referring to any potential action by Cricket West Indies.
West Indies announce pace attack for Pakistan series
With Joseph unavailable, West Indies will rely on Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Justin Greaves and Keemo Paul to lead the pace attack against Pakistan.
The spin department will include Jomel Warrican, Joshua Bishop and captain Roston Chase.
Pakistan-West Indies Test series schedule
The first Test between Pakistan and West Indies is scheduled to begin on Saturday, while the second and final Test will start on August 2 in Port of Spain.
The series marks an important part of both teams’ Test calendar as they continue preparations in the longer format.
