Islamabad, July 22: Allama Iqbal Open University has organised a one-day seminar to help students, researchers and faculty members understand international opportunities in higher education, research funding, scholarships and academic collaboration.
The seminar, titled “Research Innovation and Global Opportunities for Academic Excellence,” was arranged by the university’s Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization as part of efforts to strengthen research capacity and improve awareness of global academic pathways.
Prof. Dr. Waseem Haider of Central Michigan University, United States, delivered the keynote address and briefed participants on changes in international higher education and the options available to Pakistani students seeking advanced studies abroad.
He said digital platforms had made it easier for students to explore admission requirements, scholarship programmes, research opportunities and potential academic partnerships at universities worldwide.
According to Prof. Haider, Pakistani graduates with four-year bachelor’s degrees may qualify for direct admission to doctoral programmes at several universities in the United States.
He said eligible students could also compete for merit-based scholarships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships, depending on the admission and funding policies of individual institutions.
Prof. Haider told the participants that many American universities provide access to advanced laboratories, digital libraries, scientific equipment, high-speed internet and internationally recognised research facilities.
He said such resources could help students conduct high-quality research, develop practical solutions and improve their ability to compete in international academic and professional environments.
The seminar also included a question-and-answer session covering university admissions, scholarships, research grants, academic requirements and career prospects abroad.
Participants sought guidance on application procedures and funding options, while Prof. Haider shared practical advice for students and early-career researchers considering international study and research programmes.
Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Akhtar Khan, director of AIOU’s Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization, said the seminar was designed to provide young scholars with essential information about international admissions, research financing, scholarships and emerging academic trends.
He said such initiatives could help students better understand global opportunities and prepare them to contribute to Pakistan’s research and knowledge economy.
The event concluded with calls to strengthen research capacity, encourage innovation and expand international academic linkages.
Participants appreciated the university’s effort to provide direct guidance on international education and research opportunities.
The seminar was held under the academic engagement initiatives being pursued under the leadership of AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood, with a focus on research excellence, innovation and international collaboration.
