Pakistan’s newly released animated feature “Ainak Wala Jin: The Animated Movie” has sparked controversy after audiences criticised its visual quality and AI-generated imagery, while AI production studio Reelwind publicly distanced itself from the project.
Released in cinemas on July 24, the 85-minute Urdu-language film has been promoted as Pakistan’s first AI-generated feature-length animated movie, bringing the iconic PTV children’s classic back to the big screen for a new generation.
Social Media Criticises Visual Quality
Soon after its release, social media users began highlighting what they described as AI-generated visual flaws, including inconsistent animation, spelling errors and scenes that appeared to contain AI artefacts.
Some viewers also claimed to have spotted what appeared to be a Google Gemini watermark in one scene, prompting widespread online criticism and memes. The film was mockingly dubbed “AI Wala Jin” by some users, while others questioned whether higher-quality AI tools had been used.
Reelwind Says It Had No Role in the Film
Amid the backlash, AI production house Reelwind issued a series of statements on X, saying it had no involvement in the production of the theatrical release.
The company said it had previously spent around 10 months developing its own AI-based recreation of Ainak Wala Jin and remained in contact with Pakistan Television (PTV) during that period. However, it said it was neither informed about nor included in the production of the new animated film.
Reelwind also claimed that some character designs in the released movie appeared similar to concepts it had previously developed but stressed that the film did not represent its work or production standards.
The studio said it remained committed to reviving the classic in a meaningful way and was now focusing on an original AI animation project of its own.
Production Team Yet to Respond
Reelwind had previously spoken publicly about its AI recreation project in 2025, saying it had initially planned a single episode before expanding the concept following positive audience feedback.
However, following the company’s latest clarification, questions have emerged over the relationship between its earlier project and the officially released film.
As of Wednesday, neither the producers of “Ainak Wala Jin: The Animated Movie” nor the filmmakers had issued a formal response to Reelwind’s claims, leaving the controversy unresolved.
