Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique produced a magnificent unbeaten 160-run innings against the West Indies in the second Test, putting his team in a strong position while ending a 49-year wait for a historic milestone.
Resuming the third day’s play at 266/2 at Queen’s Park Oval, Pakistan had captain Babar Azam on 84 and Abdullah Shafique on 107. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 387, with Shafique remaining unbeaten on 160.
His innings was significant not only for Pakistan’s position in the match but also for its place in history. Shafique became the first Pakistani batter in 49 years to score 150 or more in a Test innings in the West Indies.
The previous Pakistani to achieve the feat was Majid Khan, who scored 167 runs in Guyana in 1977.
Remarkably, three of Pakistan’s last four 150-plus Test scores away from home have come from Abdullah Shafique, underlining his consistency in overseas conditions.
At the end of the reported session, the West Indies were 103/6 in their second innings, holding an overall 60-run lead over Pakistan.
