Dubai: The Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), an autonomous observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, has appointed UAE-based Pakistani businessman Umar Farooq Zahoor as a Goodwill Ambassador. Zahoor will champion the promotion of Spirulina, a protein-rich micro-algae dietary supplement, in support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals in the global fight against malnutrition.
According to a letter from Remigio Maradona, Permanent Secretary General of IIMSAM, Umar Farooq Zahoor has been named as Pro Bono Ambassador at Large under the Secretary General’s office. His appointment aims to strengthen IIMSAM’s initiatives in combating malnutrition, particularly through the global free distribution of Spirulina in underserved areas, with a key focus on Pakistan. This aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals for 2020-2030.
IIMSAM functions as an independent observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) under Resolution 2003. The organization plays a vital role in tackling global malnutrition by promoting Spirulina distribution. Zahoor joins other prominent figures recently appointed as IIMSAM Goodwill Ambassadors, including HRH Sheikha Roda Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Juma Bin Juma Al Maktoum.
In recognition of his contributions, Umar Farooq Zahoor was also recently honored with Pakistan’s Hilal-e-Imtiaz for bringing over $400 million in direct foreign investment to the country within the last 18 months. Additionally, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea awarded him the Medal of Honour for attracting $55 million USD in foreign investment. Earlier this year, Zahoor stepped down from his role as Ambassador-at-Large for Liberia after five years of service, with Liberia expressing gratitude for his continued commitment to strengthening international relations.
