NEW JERSEY: Fauzia Janjua, a Pakistani-American woman, was chosen to serve as the town mayor of New Jersey, USA. Janjua is the first Muslim woman of South Asian descent to hold the office of mayor in Mount Laurel.
Her parents were immigrants who reared her in San Francisco, where she “learned the value of hard work, education, and charity.” She is a co-founder of Community SJP, a non-profit that gives away blankets to shelters and hospitals, buys school supplies, and prepares meals for the underprivileged. She teaches first grade at Cinnaminson’s Westfield Friends School right now.
There are other Muslim and South Asian women making waves in the West besides Ms. Janjua. In addition to being the first mayor, Senator Ghazala Hashmi was the first South Asian American and Muslim to hold office in the Virginia Senate. She served as the 10th Senatorial District’s representative in the General Assembly.
Furthermore dispelling prejudiced preconceptions are Muslim males who have important leadership positions in the West.
Amer Ghalib, a 42-year-old Yemeni immigrant, won a notable election victory in the US state of Michigan’s Hamtramck. He was the city’s first Muslim mayor in addition to being the first Arab American.

As the deputy national climate advisor for the White House under President Biden, Ali Zaidi holds the highest position among Pakistani Americans in the administration.
