An avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak has left 10 climbers missing, prompting an ongoing rescue operation in the Karakoram mountain range, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP). The missing expedition includes mountaineers from several countries and was reportedly led by renowned Nepali climber Nirmal Purja.
The incident occurred on Broad Peak (8,047 metres), the world’s 12th-highest mountain, in northern Pakistan. Officials said the team lost contact after the avalanche, and authorities are working to deploy rescue resources as weather and operational conditions allow.
International Team Reported Missing
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the expedition consisted of 10 climbers, including five from Nepal, one each from Pakistan, Oman, China, and the United States, as well as one additional foreign climber whose nationality has not been disclosed.
The club said communication with the entire team has been lost since the avalanche, raising concerns about their safety.
Rescue Efforts Underway
The Alpine Club of Pakistan said every effort is being made to launch rescue operations, including the possible deployment of helicopters and other available emergency resources, subject to weather conditions and operational feasibility.
Authorities have not released further details about the climbers’ condition, and search efforts remain ongoing.
Broad Peak is located in Pakistan’s Karakoram range and is a popular destination for high-altitude mountaineering expeditions during the summer climbing season.
