GUAYAQUIL/QUITO: As security personnel resumed their incursions into jails, authorities said that two individuals had been taken into custody in relation to the death of Ecuadorian prosecutor Cesar Suarez, who was supposedly the target of a gang.
President Daniel Noboa of Ecuador has declared 22 gangs to be “terrorist” organizations and instituted a 60-day state of emergency as the country struggles with a wave of violence.
This month has seen a number of incidents, including as an armed gunman’s attack on the TC television station, the kidnapping of police officers, and the hostage-taking of almost 200 prison employees.

During a news conference, General Victor Herrera, the head of Guayaquil police, informed journalists that Suarez, who concentrated on chasing organized trans-national crime in Guayas province, was ambushed by gunmen in two automobiles while driving in the northern part of the city.
According to Herrera, Suarez was in charge of looking into crimes involving corruption and drug trafficking in addition to the attack on the television station, in which journalists and other people were momentarily taken captive.
