ISLAMABAD – The United States Chargé d’Affaires to Pakistan, Ms. Natalie A. Baker, visited the Head Office of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) in Islamabad, where she was warmly received by President and CEO Mr. Tahir Yaqoob Bhatti.
During the meeting, Mr. Bhatti briefed Ms. Baker on ZTBL’s vision, operations, and strategic initiatives focused on promoting agricultural and rural development across Pakistan. He highlighted the Bank’s role as the country’s leading specialized financial institution serving the agriculture sector for over seven decades. With a nationwide network of 501 branches, over 90 percent of which are located in rural and underserved areas, ZTBL continues to play a vital role in advancing financial inclusion and literacy among farmers.
A video documentary showcasing ZTBL’s key initiatives and achievements was presented, including outreach programs such as Zarai Baithaks and Mobile Van Services, designed to bring banking and advisory services directly to remote farming communities. Mr. Bhatti also emphasized the Bank’s partnerships with academia and research institutions to boost agricultural productivity and promote modern farming technologies.
Discussions also covered ZTBL’s ongoing digital transformation, including the introduction of internet, WhatsApp, and mobile banking services to make loan payments and settlements more accessible for farmers. Mr. Bhatti highlighted efforts to collaborate with agricultural service providers to improve smallholder farmers’ access to quality inputs and services.
Ms. Baker praised ZTBL’s contributions toward supporting small farmers and strengthening Pakistan’s agriculture-based economy. She noted that several U.S. businesses are investing in Pakistan’s agriculture and food sectors. Both sides exchanged views on the challenges of food security and the pressures facing the agricultural sector.
The Chargé d’Affaires reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Pakistan’s efforts in building a more resilient agricultural economy. Mr. Bhatti, in turn, expressed ZTBL’s willingness to collaborate on initiatives that enhance productivity, promote financial inclusion, and ensure long-term food security.
The meeting concluded with a mutual resolve to explore future opportunities for cooperation, aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s farming communities, attracting U.S. investment, and fostering sustainable growth in the agriculture sector.
