Zimbabwe have qualified for the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after their Group B match against the Ireland national cricket team was abandoned due to rain.
The washout awarded one point to each side, taking Zimbabwe’s tally to five points from three matches — enough to secure progression. The result also confirmed the elimination of the Australia national cricket team from the tournament.
Led by Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe entered the contest with four points following victories over Oman and Australia. The additional point ensured they could not be overtaken by Australia, who have two points from three matches and can reach a maximum of four even if they win their final group fixture against Oman.
Group B standings clarified
Zimbabwe have emerged as one of the surprise performers in the tournament, registering wins over both Oman and Australia. Their consistent performances placed them in a strong position heading into the Ireland match.
Ireland, meanwhile, recorded one win against Oman but suffered defeats to Sri Lanka and Australia, limiting their qualification hopes.
The Sri Lanka national cricket team had already secured their Super 8 berth from Group B after defeating Australia by eight wickets on February 16.
With Zimbabwe joining Sri Lanka in the next round, Australia’s campaign comes to an early end despite being former T20 World Cup champions.
