Zapad-2025 Strategic Exercise Mobilizes 100,000 Troops Across Russia and Belarus

Moscow — The Zapad-2025 strategic exercise, the final stage of joint training for the Armed Forces of Russia and Belarus, is underway across 41 land and sea training grounds in both countries. Held from September 12 through 16, the exercise aims to practice operations to repel potential aggression against the Union State.

Combat training tasks are being executed with consideration of experience gained during the special military operation. These scenarios reflect real-world combat conditions and emphasize modern warfare tactics.

During his visit to the training grounds, President of Russia Vladimir Putin spoke briefly with representatives of foreign countries invited to observe the Zapad-2025 drill. He also inspected weapons and military and special equipment engaged in the exercise.

Addressing the troops, President Putin stated:

“Comrades, Today we are holding the final stage of the Zapad-2025 strategic exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to practice all the necessary elements for the absolute protection of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the security of the Union State against any aggression.”

The exercise involves 100,000 service personnel and approximately 10,000 pieces of modern weapons and military equipment. Among these are 333 aircraft from tactical, strategic, and military transport aviation, along with more than 247 vessels including surface ships, submarines, and support vessels.

Twenty-five foreign delegations arrived for the Zapad-2025 exercise. Sixteen states sent representatives, while six countries dispatched military contingents to participate in the strategic programme.

Concluding his address, President Putin called upon the Minister of Defence to report on the readiness of the troops for the final stage of the exercise. In addition, he extended his best wishes to all participants. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of their role in safeguarding the sovereignty and security of the Union State.

The Zapad series of exercises, held biennially, has evolved into one of the largest multinational military drills in Eurasia. It serves as a demonstration of operational readiness. It also sends a strategic signal of unity between Russia and Belarus. Zapad-2025 integrates lessons from recent conflicts. It expands international participation.
